About the Book

The House on Mango Street, is about a young girl named Esperanza and her move to Mango Street. Esperanza and there family, used to live in an apartment together until there was a problem with the pipes and the landlord refused to fix them. Therefore, Esperanza's family had to find a new place to live; Mango Street. While living on Mango Street, Esperanza meets some news friends. Some of them are Sally, Rachel and Lucy. Sally is a girl about Esperanza's age who lives with a physically abusive father, and is all ready sexually active. Lucy and Rachel are sisters and they both live across the street. Esperanza chooses Sally over Rachel and Lucy because Sally more is sexually mature.

After being sexually assaulted when a girl she thought was her friend leaves her alone, she learns that sex isn't like what she sees on the television and reads about in magazines. Towards the end of the story, Rachel and Lucy's baby sister dies, and at the funeral she meets their three aunts. She is drawn to the aunts and they tell her that she'll never truly leave Mango Street because she'll come back for the others--all the people she met and her family--even when she physically does. To sum it all up, this is a coming of age story about a little girl who grows up much faster than she needs to.
